Relay for Life draws community together to raise funds for ACS

Proceeds from the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Greene County, held Saturday at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson, very nearly met the $52,000 mark. Relay chairperson Peg Raney reported Monday proceeds of $51,934.44. The books won’t close on this year’s Relay until August.

RFL AAIsponsorSponsorships by businesses and organizations brought in $12,175 in cash and $6,355 in in-kind donations. Sponsors at the platinum level with donations of $1,250 or more were presented by Raney with plaques. Accepting a plaque for AAI Inc was Kirsten Russell in her Color Out Cancer 5K run/walk attire. RFL Color Out winnerThe first-ever Color Out Cancer 5K run/walk was closed to registrations at 250 participants. The event added $4,700 to the Relay coffers. Pictured is Craig Hildreth of Lytton, the first person to finish the fun event.

RFL Cattlemen grillingThe Greene County Cattlemen grilled for the barbecue, which netted $1,376.43 in donations. Pictured at the grill are (from left) Mike Bravard, Justin Robbins and Mick Towers.

BTF luminariaLuminaria were not lit because the luminaria ceremony was held in daylight. A total of $1,152 was donated to dedicate luminaria to cancer survivors or those who died of cancer.

The silent auction netted record proceeds of $5,490.

The top team in fundraising was Home State Bank’s Team Towers with $5,993. The Cancer Crusaders raised $3,046, and St Joe’s Holy Walkamolies raised $2,854.

Other teams over the $1,000 mark were: the Does, $2,307; NHS Stompers, $2,077; Greene County Medical Center Team, $1,962; Paton-Churdan Coaches vs. Cancer, $1,973; Team J.C., $1,900; and Team Hope, $1,085. Several teams were near the $600 mark.

Proceeds of $225 from the American Cancer Society bridge marathon held from October through April were reported with the Relay for Life total.

“Relay for Life of Greene County was very successful thanks to so many people participating on teams, as a volunteer, as a participant in the activities, and by purchasing items. Their efforts are greatly appreciated because they’ll help in the American Cancer Society’s worthwhile work in serving cancer patients and their caregivers, education and advocacy, and funding life-saving research to end cancer,” Raney said.
